Good dental health is very important throughout life irrespective of age. Teeth cleaning procedure is considered as one of the most under estimated process by most of the individuals in our daily lives. In most of the researches it has been proven that people do not clean their teeth very often, ‘do not clean’ means the tiny areas between teeth where the brush cannot reach and the development of germs may occur. Now this may take an extra effort to make these germs go away. Most of them would wonder despite daily brushing why do they have dental problems. Well, it’s very important to take time and have sessions with the dentist just for the purpose of teeth cleaning.Generally dentists advice to have one session of cleaning done for every 6 months. Most of them would be in a misconception that teeth cleaning process would be painful, continued to have a jaw pain etc. But, the teeth cleaning process doesn’t involve any kind of pain during the process or after its done.
Oral hygiene is an important part in our daily life. Keeping our teeth clean can also help us avoid various other health issues
1. Physical screening
Regular dental cleaning procedures are conducted by dental hygienist and this procedure is done before the cleaning actually takes place. This begins with the overall physical examination of the mouth. The dental hygienist uses a small mirror to look around to check for any symptoms of gingivitis (inflamed gums) or any other potential concerns. They detect major issues and check with the dentist if it’s okay to start the teeth cleaning process.
2. Scaling (removing plaque and tartar)
The first step of teeth cleaning process will be scaling. During this process, dentist holds a hand held tool that helps remove the plaque and tartar from around the gum line and in between the gaps of the teeth. The scrapping of depends on the amount of tartar present on the teeth. In general cases when there is a minimal amount of tartar it is scrapped off with the hand held device, but when there a larger amount of tartar it is scraped of using an electronic device that causes a little bit of vibration coupled with stream of water.
It is the polishing of the tooth surface with the help of a small rubber motorized cup with an abrasive polishing compound. The main objective of polishing teeth is to prevent plaque from accumulating on the tooth surface. Polishing may also give tooth a shiny smooth texture, and it helps to remove the stains that may be present.
Toothpaste cleaning is also a step involved along polishing.
This step is started after most of the removal of plaque or tartar from above and beneath the surface levels of the teeth. The hygienist brushes the teeth with a high powdered electric brush, which makes a grinding noise. Professional cleaning uses toothpastes that are of the regular flavors or any specific flavor. It has a gritty consistency that could generally scrub your teeth. When it’s done by a professional they recommend it to be done for twice a year. And as we all know if we be too harsh on our teeth it might result in wearing of the enamel.
4. Flossing and Rinsing
Flossing can be done at home too, but there is a difference between professional flossing and the one done at home. The dental hygienist can get deep between the teeth and the gums and locate any potential trouble spots where there might be bleeding gums. Flossing at home may not be at advantage. But, flossing under a professional would help remove any plaque or toothpaste from the previous stages as well.
Rinsing is done to get rid of any dental debris. Usually this rinse may contain liquid fluoride.
5. Fluoride treatment
The last step of teeth cleaning process is the fluoride cleaning. Fluoride is a mineral that helps to strengthen the enamel or the outermost layer of the toothso that it helps in resisting the acid attacks that might lead to tooth decay. This process is done to help teeth fight against cavities for several months. During this problem the doctor applies fluoride in the form of gel, rinse or varnish. This fluoride comes with a wide range of flavors (mint, cherry, strawberry, chocolate etc.) depending on the taste of the patients.
Who is eligible?
This treatment is advisable to every individual. Mostly children because they are very easily prone to cavities. Every doctor recommends this treatment atleast once a year or every six months. Instead of waiting for a dental problem and then consulting a dentist its always better to take preventive measures and keeping oral hygiene on the track. Teeth cleaning doesn’t have any particular timing to visit the doctor it can be done based on your comfort level to attend the session.
Who is not eligible?
As told above, every individual is eligible. In case you have any heart problems just let your doctor know before the treatment process.
Any side effects?

After the treatment process you may return to normal activities immediately. There are no compulsions on any factor related to oral health.
