Introduction to Myo Braces
Myobraces is an appliaces to straighten teeth without the use of braces. This treatment uses Myofunctional orthodontics to address the underlying causes of crooked teeth.
What is Myofunctional orthodontics?
A soft silicone oral appliance is used in the treatment of correcting poor oral habits in children.
How does Myobrace work?
Poor oral habits are seen generally before all the permanent teeth are formed. This means the treatment of will have to start at much earlier age. It can be started at three years of age.
Myobrace is actually designed to deal with the Myofunctional habits by teaching kids to rest the tongue in a proper way in the roof of the mouth, swallow correctly, continue widening jaws to make them grow to their proper size, and also teach them to breathe through nose. A few studies on MyoBraces have shown that Myobraces can also help in mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea in children. [Study-1] [Study-2]
Myobraces Vs. normal braces?
Firstly, Myobraces treatment can be started at a very early stage based on how big or small the issue is. Secondly, Myobraces system uses intra oral applications which should be worn for just one hour each day and overnight while sleeping (which implies it doesn’t disturb the day of the child). Next, it avoids wearing braces for the entire day and reduces pain and the awkward look in public. Also separate appliances are used for different age groups, based on the diagnosis of the problem.
Myobraces – An introductory video
The below video is from the manufacturer of Myobraces and will give you a complete about this treatment.
There are four stages of treatment.
- Habit correction
- Arc development
- Dental alignment
This stage of Myobraces treatment helps to let teeth come in a straight and perfect way by teaching the child:
- to breathe through the nose instead of mouth
- to swallow in the right way
- to keep the lips together when not eating or speaking
- to hold the tongue to rest in a correct position
By focusing on these particular activities the child will have the best possible ways to grow to teeth in a correct manner. This might help the child to not need braces anytime later!
This development may help to widen the upper jaw along with the habbit correction stage. This addition might help achieve fast recovery of jaw development in children.
This step will help align teeth into natural position just before the permanent teeth are erupting. Due to the nature of removable appliances they should be worn overnight while sleeping as already discussed. This step involves following doctor’s directions with dedication for faster and improved results.
Retention is the final stage and is done to ensure to maintain good oral health. It is required to prevent relapse after the removal of braces. With good maintenance of all the above steps it will help children have good oral health.

It takes less time to straighten teeth unlike other braces. Using retainers for a long period of time can also be avoided through the treatment of myobraces.
It’s always better to choose natural ways of treatment above the artificial ways.
Common reasons for teeth malocclusion in children
Yes, even thumb sucking might result in a problem. Kids and their self-built little comforting habits! While they suck their thumb, it might result in pushing the growing teeth forward thereby resulting in the need of braces in the later stages. A Few problems due to thumb sucking are diastema (a gap between upper front teeth), proclination (tilting of teeth towards the lip) etc.
Nail biting and pencil chewing might also affect the alignment of growing child’s teeth.
Kids might have their tooth not growing in a straight way for few other reasons as well. But whatever the reason is, there is a solution in Orthodontics.

Other types of braces
1. Metal braces / traditional braces
Metallic braces were the first used orthodontic appliances that were invented to straighten teeth. these metal braces are made of high quality stainless steel or titanium alloys. Metallic braces consist or three components viz., metallic brackets, metallic archwires and orthodontic ligatures. One of the disadvantage of this isthese braces are highly visual when smiling or opening mouth for any purpose. One of the advantage is they are always available in most affordable price. As it was invented first it’s known as traditional braces also.
2. Ceramic braces
These braces are of the same size as metal braces. Here the braces are made of ceramic instead of metal. Here the wires can also be made transparent to make the braces less noticeable and may also help move teeth faster. These braces are bit more expensive than the traditional braces. The brackets can stain easily if the patient doesn’t care enough for them.
3. Lingual braces
These braces are similar to the traditional ones but the metal braces are placed on the inside of the teeth giving an advantage of not noticing the metal brace on the outside. The disadvantage is, it is difficult to clean and is more expensive, moreover it is not suitable for many cases and it makes you uncomfortable.
These are plastic form of dental braces used to adjust teeth. It involves controlled teeth movements. Easily removable so that you can keep brushing as usual. One of the advantage is, this is almost invisible and patients can eat drink whatever they want at any time. Disadvantage is they are not available for children and they do not work when there are serious dental problems.
